The Bierpinsel
Location: Schloßstraße, Steglitz, Berlin
Architect: Ursula and Ralph Schuler
Completed: 1976
Status: 1976- present
Brief Overview: Built in 1976 by architects Ursula and Ralph Schuler in South Berlin's Steglitz, the Bierpinsel (Beer Brush) .Designed to resemble a tree, this 47m-tall structure offers panoramic views. Originally housing a restaurant and nightclub, it faced financial issues and closures. Reopened in 2010 as "Turmkunst," it featured street artists' works but remains closed today without plans to reopen. The building extends from the Joachim Tiburtius Bridge and features a tower constructed from concrete, plastic cladding, and paint. Originally, the exterior was painted red around the top section.
Concrete sculptures are individually hand cast in solid concrete. This means that each piece will have distinctive markings and minor blemishes due to air bubbles in the concrete. This is a natural part of the material and will mean that no two pieces are never exactly the same.
