Les Choux de Creteil
Location: Creteil, Paris, France
Architect: Gerard Grandval
Completed: 1974
Status: 1969- present
Brief Overview: Built in 1966 on the former Pompadour plain, once a bustling vegetable production centre in Paris, the Les Choux district stands as a testament to architectural innovation and urban revitalization. Comprising ten 14 storey round towers and an annular building, the ensemble's unique design, resembling a cauliflower with its balconies, has earned it the moniker "Les Choux" (The Cabbages). Despite initial plans for greenery adorning the balconies to enhance the buildings' appearance throughout the seasons, the idea was rejected by the developer. Recognized as a 20th-century heritage site in 2008, Les Choux has transcended its architectural significance to become an icon of popular culture.
Concrete sculptures are individually hand cast in solid concrete. This means that each piece will have distinctive markings and minor blemishes due to air bubbles in the concrete. This is a natural part of the material and will mean that no two pieces are never exactly the same.
