The Barbican Centre
Location: London, England
Architect: Chamberlin, Powell & Bon
Completed: 1982
Status: Grade II Listed
Brief Overview: The Barbican Centre is a performing arts centre- the largest of it's kind in Europe. It was built as the City's gift to the nation and formerly opened by Queen Elizabeth II. It is situated in an area that was badly bombed during World War II, and is surrounded by the Barbican Estate housing complex. Typically with Brutalism the design divides opinion- and in 2003 it was voted Britain's ugliest building. As well as hosting a variety of music concerts, theatre productions, film screenings and art exhibitions The Barbican Centre is also home to the London Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra and is the London base of the Royal Shakespeare Company.
