The maneki-neko (招き猫, literally “beckoning cat”) is a popular Japanese figurine believed to bring good luck and fortune to its owner. Today, these figures are typically made from ceramic or plastic and commonly depict a cat—often a calico Japanese Bobtail—with one paw raised in a beckoning gesture.

You’ll often find maneki-neko displayed near the entrances of businesses such as shops, restaurants, pachinko parlors, laundromats, dry cleaners, bars, casinos, hotels, and nightclubs. They're also commonly kept in homes. Some versions even feature a mechanical paw that slowly moves back and forth in a continuous beckoning motion.

Maneki-neko come in a variety of colors, styles, and levels of detail. Common colors include white, black, red, and gold. Beyond traditional statues, these lucky symbols also appear as keychains, piggy banks, air fresheners, flower pots, and in many other forms. They're often referred to as “lucky cats” or “calling cats.”
