Location: London, EnglandArchitect: Michael Blampied & PartnersCompleted: 1970Status: Demolished 2019Brief Overview: Welbeck Street Car Park was built to serve the nearby department store Debenhams. It opened to much acclaim from the architectural press- with its iconic tessellated concrete diamond facades. With Central London becoming less car orientated it was rendered obsolete, and the site was sold in 2016 with permission given for demolition in 2017. Campaigns to save it were led by preservation body Twentieth Century Society, but ultimately Historic England denied it Listed status and demolition began in 2019.
concrete sculptures are individually hand cast in solid concrete. This means that each piece will have distinctive markings and minor blemishes due to air bubbles in the concrete. This is a natural part of the material and will mean that no two pieces are ever exactly the same.
